With the blessing of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, an annual pilgrimage to Tatev Monastery was established, bringing together more than 3,000 pilgrims to date as a powerful expression of spiritual unity.
«Tree of Life» Initiative
In 2008, the distinguished philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan, inspired by Tatev’s potential, declared: “The Tatev Monastery must become active once again so that, as it did a thousand years ago, the entire region may develop around it.”
These words laid the foundation for the large-scale “Revival of Tatev” project — a vision that continues to evolve to this day.
Building upon this vision and continuing its charitable legacy, the “We Are Our Mountains” development agency, together with its co-organizers, launched the “Tree of Life” initiative in 2024.
At the heart of this initiative is a pilgrimage to Tatev Monastery, a historic stronghold of Armenian spirituality, resilience, and resistance.
Symbolizing a return to our roots and national traditions, the initiative draws strength, energy, and hope from the past in order to inspire renewal in the present.
Key Results of the Initiative
Continuing the projects of Ruben Vardanyan and expressing continuity with his philanthropic mission, the “We Are Our Mountains” development agency, in cooperation with partner organizations, implemented a charitable initiative to create a new fruit orchard in Tatev. Tree planting and the establishment of a green zone were carried out near Tatev Monastery and the Wings of Tatev cableway.
The orchard became a symbol of life and new beginnings, reflecting Ruben Vardanyan’s contribution to the prosperity of his people and homeland. Each tree also symbolizes the support of the project participants for Ruben Vardanyan and other compatriots unlawfully detained in Azerbaijan.
On May 25, 2024, the official opening ceremony of the orchard took place. As part of the event, a symbolic “Tree of Life” — a plane tree (called sosi, chinar, or tndjri in Armenian) — was planted. Sacred and deeply revered by Armenians, the tree symbolizes resilience of character, compassion, nobility, and longevity, and is closely tied to many traditions throughout Armenian history.
